Albania Awaits You

Language

In Albania, you will often notice cities spelled in two distinct ways—such as Durrës and Durrësi, or Shkodër and Shkodra. Similar to the distinction between Tiranë and Tirana, this variation occurs because Albanian uses definite and indefinite noun forms. Try to learn both forms because it makes using public transit much easier. Derived from the Italian phrase for "along the sea," a Lungomare is the pedestrian promenade that serves as the social and architectural anchor of Albania’s coastal cities. Rather than a simple walkway, it functions as a primary public stage for the traditional evening xhiro—a communal stroll where residents of all generations gather to socialize as the sun sets. In coastal hubs like Vlorë and Sarandë, the Lungomare provides a shared place where residents and travelers alike converge to appreciate the vast, unobstructed horizon of the Adriatic.

Life in Albania

Selecting a long-term residence requires balancing personal priorities with the practicalities of the Albanian landscape. Identifying your specific requirements—whether proximity to transit or access to a coastal lifestyle—will efficiently narrow your options. The Urban Center: Tiranë and Durrës For those requiring a metropolitan environment year-round, Tiranë and the adjacent Durrës are the primary choices. These cities provide the most consistent infrastructure and the most direct access to Tirana International Airport (TIA). The Coastal Profile: Sarandë and Vlorë The southern coast offers varied experiences depending on the season and city scale: Sarandë: Ideal for those seeking a tranquil low season contrasted by a high-energy summer. It is a geographically vertical city; its hilly terrain provides excellent views but requires more physical effort. Notably, the superior beaches are located further south toward Ksamil, and the Greek island of Corfu is accessible via a 20-minute ferry. For those seeking an established expat community outside the capital, Sarandë is the most connected hub. Vlorë: As a mid-sized city, Vlorë maintains a steady local population and active atmosphere even after the summer tourism peak. It offers a more balanced pace, though its increased distance from both TIA and Corfu should be factored into travel logistics. The Port Perspective: Durrës While coastal, Durrës is primarily an ancient port city rather than a resort town. It is defined by its deep historical roots and industrial sectors. Those looking for a dedicated beach-town atmosphere or a large expat network may find it less suited to those specific needs compared to the south. The Historic & Inland Interior: Gjirokastër, Shkodër, and Pogradec Inland Albania provides distinct cultural and natural environments: Gjirokastër: A hillside town characterized by steep cobblestone streets and significant Ottoman architecture. While the expat presence is minimal, it is an essential location for nature and history. Shkodër & Pogradec: Both cities are defined by their proximity to major lakes—Lake Shkodra in the north and Lake Ohrid in the southeast. Shkodër is the larger of the two, though both maintain small, quiet communities of foreign residents. Unlike Progradec, Shkodër has a pedestrian area with a very Italian feel. It was built by Kolë Idromeno, an Albanian architect and painter, who designed the area after a visit to Venice. Tidbits to Know

There are a few things you may notice in Albania when staying there. Taxis that are available often leave their doors open to encourage customers. Hotels may leave the doors to rooms that are unoccupied open as well. While there are some taxi companies in Albania, they do not necessarily cover all areas or run all the time. If you find a taxi driver that you like, make sure to save their information on Whatsapp.
